Studio Movie Grill- Arlington, TX

I went last night to watch Night at the Museum. It’s a pretty cool place. For those of you that don’t know, this is a place that just opened up in the new Arlington Highland shopping center. It’s at Matlock and I20. This shopping center is going to be HUGE!

The Studio Movie Grill is a mixture between a restaurant and a movie theater. You get to watch the latest movies while eating dinner or having some drinks. It’s the same idea as the Movie Tavern.

So I used my free ticket(members to the boards should have gotten one in your email ;) ) and there was no hassle. The place looks really nice and they appear to have a decent bar there too. Didn’t get a chance to check it out since I was late to my movie already.

The seating inside the actual theater are rolling office style chairs with a long bar like table in front of them. The table is dimmly lit so that you can see what your eating, but it doesn’t distract from the movie much. The chairs are pretty firm. When I first sat down, I thought it was way too firm, but I decided later that they were good seats. No sore back afterwards or anything.

I was in a cheap mood(haven’t gotten my financial aid refund yet) so I can’t really review the food. I got a soda($2.50 with free refills) and a basket of fries($3.99). The fries were nicely seasoned- salted, spiced, and some parmesan cheese on top. The portion was also larger than I expected from a theater. The free refills on soda is cool since it’s cheaper than a 5 dollar soda at a normal theater. Entrees on the menu were mostly 8 bucks and up- so not the cheapest food prices. They DO have drink specials during the week!

The theater was nice and clean, which would be expected for a theater during it’s opening week. I did think it was funny that one of their neon letters is already burned out. By the way, if you plan on going to any movie that’s under an R rating, expect there to be families with children there.

The only thing I found missing was an arcade. Every theater needs an arcade! But that’s just the nerd in my speaking out.

Overall, it’s a nice place. They’re main competition would be Movie Tavern. Movie Taverns usually take over an older theater or other building and retrofit them to their needs. Studio Movie Grill was built from the ground up so things seem to fit better. Plus, everything is newer. The price of tickets is a little higher it seems. I’d come here before going to AMC though. The price of food was comparable to a sit down restaurant like TGI Friday’s. I’d rather eat at an actual restaurant personally- but it’d be great if you don’t have the time. All in all, it was definately worth the free ticket ;)

EDIT: It turns out you can get tickets for 5 bucks with your Mav ID card! That bumped their review up a notch in my book :)

New score: 4 out of 5

The Arlington City Council approved a contract with American Traffic Solutions on Jan. 9 to place red light cameras at the 63 intersections with the highest numbers of red light violators. In the last five years, more than 1,500 people have been injured due to someone running a red light in Arlington according to Steve Evans, Arlington Police Department management services director.

“We hope for a 25 percent reduction,” Evans said.

The department hopes to have 10 cameras up at intersections in the next 60 days, starting with the intersections owned by the city. The construction at intersections owned by the state will be delayed until action is approved by the Texas Department of Transportation.

The first three intersections to undergo camera construction are Matlock Road and Arbrook Boulevard, South Green Oaks Boulevard and Collins Street, and South Green Oaks Boulevard and Matlock Road, all owned by the city of Arlington.
